1. What is the Atkins Induction phase?
Induction - The most controversial aspect of the diet, the first phase, but it is not all the diet!
Induction phase is the first two weeks of the Atkins diet, they are strict, with only 20 grams of carbohydrates permitted per day and after it starts 3 more phases - Ongoing Weight Loss (OWL), Pre-Maintenance and Lifetime Maintenance phase.
2. Do I need to start diet with Induction?
No, not everyone needs to start at Induction to see positive results with Atkins, but I recommend You to do so.
Atkins low carbohydrate diet is more than a diet, it is a helpful eating tool that not only leads to weight loss and weight management, but also helps you develop strong eating habits that contribute to overall health and well being.
3. How long can I stay in the Atkins Induction phase?
Atkins states that a dieter can safely stay at the Atkins low carb diet plans Induction phase for several months if the person has a lot of weight to lose.
Induction, however, is merely a stage to get the body used to fat, and cure cravings for unacceptable foods.
Gradually, carbohydrate levels are raised to slow weight loss and add more acceptable foods (berries, more dairy, nuts, etc.), though carbs are still significantly below USDA norms.
Once the weight-loss goal is reached, carbohydrate levels are raised again to a state of equilibrium where no weight is lost or gained, which depends on the individual's metabolism, age, and their exercise level. And you are still within or slightly above the definition of ketosis.
4. How can I know that I am in ketosis?
Many Atkins followers make use of Ketostix, small chemically reactive strips used by diabetics. These let the dieter monitor when they enter the ketosis, or fat burning phase, but are not always accurate for non-diabetic users. Other indicators of ketosis include a metallic taste in the mouth, or bad breath.
5. What is lipolysis and ketosis?
Lipolysis is the biochemical process of dissolving fat.
When you dissolve fat, it breaks down into glycerol and other fatty acids, which in turn break down into by-products called ketones. When this happens you are enjoying a state called ketosis.
Atkins initiates ketosis by restricting carbohydrate intake to 20 grams per day (Induction phase), a level that is then gradually increased as you move on through the Atkins diet phases.
6. Are lipolysis and the secondary process of ketosis safe?
Yes. Lipolysis results in the creation of ketones (that’s ketosis), a perfectly normal and natural function of the body. Some individuals may experience side effects from ketosis such as bad breath, but the vast majority of people do not develop medical problems.
Research shows that chronic ketosis without caloric restriction poses no danger to your heart, kidneys, blood or bone health.
Remember, ketosis is NOT ketoacidosis (a condition found in a Type I diabetic person whose blood sugar is out of control and who cannot produce insulin).
